The Activated Protein C Resistance (APCR) Test is a vital diagnostic tool used to evaluate the risk of thromboembolic disorders, which can lead to serious health complications such as deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism. Understanding your risk factors is crucial for preventative health measures.

What Is the Activated Protein C Resistance (APCR) Test?

The Activated Protein C Resistance (APCR) Test is a vital diagnostic tool used to evaluate the risk of thromboembolic disorders, which can lead to serious health complications such as deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism. Understanding your risk factors is crucial for preventative health measures.

Who Should Consider This Test?

Individuals who may benefit from the APCR Test include:

  • Those with a family history of thromboembolic disorders.
  • Patients experiencing unexplained blood clots.
  • Individuals who have had recurrent miscarriages.
  • Patients on anticoagulant therapy.

What Does the Test Detect or Measure?

This test specifically measures the resistance of blood to the anticoagulant effects of activated protein C. A high resistance indicates a greater risk for developing abnormal blood clots.

Sample Requirements

To ensure accurate results, please follow these instructions:

  • Sample Type: 3 mL whole blood in 1 Blue Top (Sodium Citrate) tube.
  • Mix thoroughly by inversion. Transport to the lab within 4 hours.
  • If delayed, make Platelet Poor Plasma (PPP) within 1 hour of collection.
  • Complete a Coagulation Requisition Form (Form 15) before testing.
  • Discontinue Heparin for 1 day and Oral Anticoagulants for 7 days prior to sampling (with physician consent).

What the Results May Show

Results from the APCR Test can help you and your healthcare provider understand your risk level for thromboembolic events. A clear understanding of your results is essential for making informed health decisions.

Benefits or Clinical Value

Taking the APCR Test can provide valuable insights into your health, including:

  • Identifying genetic predispositions to clotting disorders.
